The steam powered Durango & Silverton, part of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western, ascends the Animas River Canyon to the town of Silverton, CO. The train travels 45 miles north from Durango, CO through scenery that resembles Switzerland.  Eventually it reaches Silverton after three water stops for the thirsty engine. The last 27 miles of the trip travel through areas that are only reachable via train, hiking or helicopter. Just prior to the last water stop the train drops off and picks up backpackers.
